Critics Consensus

Driven by an unsettlingly compelling Lizzy Caplan, Castle Rock's second chapter opens the borders of its titular town without losing any of its creeping atmosphere.

Critic Reviews for Castle Rock Season 2

A lot of horror anthologies hinge on concept instead of character or performance, but I'm happy to see "Castle Rock" bucking that trend.

Dec 3, 2019 | Full Review…

One episode in, this season of Castle Rock is pulpy in a way season one didn't attempt. It's quick and sharp and tense and breathless.

What's here is still effective, affecting, and original - despite appearances.

There are so many threads being woven together, and try as they might, there's just not enough knots being tied to make it all work. In the end, everyone suffers, and we're left with cheeky references, hollow drama, and zero stakes.

Dec 3, 2019 | Full Review…

Castle Rock delivers the expected violence, suspense, and horror. But its most abundant strength is its faithful adherence to one of King's primary tenets as an author: that there is nothing more frightening then the unpredictability of human nature.

One of this season's greatest strengths is how it excels at depicting Annie's psychosis and paranoia in visually different and creative ways. It continually feels fresh and stressful.

Dec 3, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

Season 2 evokes the best Stephen King adaptations by ramping up the pacing, dread, and slasher flick fun in a way the first season didn't.

Dec 3, 2019 | Full Review…

Like its impressive and satisfying inaugural run, this latest season of Castle Rock is filled with clever writing, delightful callbacks to King's book universe and terrific performances.

Nov 4, 2019 | Full Review…

Castle Rock's second season gets a welcome fresh coat of creative paint with the addition of Lizzy Caplan's engaging performance as Misery's Annie Wilkes.

This is a great starting point to understanding Annie Wilkes... if that's possible.

Oct 31, 2019 | Full Review…

Reinterpreting a beloved Stephen King villain like Annie Wilkes is a tall order, but Lizzy Caplan makes it look easy.

Castle Rock...manages to take the somewhat bumpy ride to this point and turn it to an advantage.

My review is Similar to another so I will repost it here... It's hard... hard to write a bad review whenever it comes to any of Kings work... that being said something bad has happened. The shine is dead in king town. Many of us have grown to to king movies and tv shows as a child I would beg my mom to let me watch the next episode of rose red or kingdom hospital... I have read every book and have every comic. When I found out Hollywood had planned to do reboots and new takes on old works I was Excited! But as things go, when it comes to " new eyes" and reboots... it was more of a let down, from dark tower to it, Hulu's castle rock and now doctor sleep... we see a new face of king or maybe something much darker... A conspiracy, A conspiracy to take blocks out of the dark tower of fiction Stephen King has written, has dreamed , has built... his legacy seems to be fading away and it seems to be due to Hollywood. I'm sorry Mr. King I still see the tower gone... I still see the rocks and mud held together by fountain and typewriter ink... did you give up? Or was it the money? Whatever the case you're forever fans cry's tears for the lost, your Characters still stir in a pool of ink mixed with the tears of fans... has the hard man grew soft? Writers used to use the "king rule" if Hollywood grabs a book... you still keep creative control... what happened? Money over fans or are you just tired? So many questions that will never gain answers or take any form of the truth. Writers we must kill the snakes and build the worlds we dreamed... not let others pick at the bones of our works... it's our workshop not theirs! To anyone wanting to know about the movie or the show I maybe commenting on... watch the show, you bought the tickets and are ready for the ride... just be prepared to cry.

Season 2 is GREAT! No need to see Season 1, which was unremarkable and disappointing as a whole. The series just takes place in the same town, Castle Rock. The writers have based the characters in Stephen King fan favorite novels and stories, given creative license to create something new and unexpected, which I find wonderfully done this time around!

Big fan of the first series so this so was expecting something special from season 2 I was a little unsure after the first few episodes maybe was the pace or I was comparing but after halfway through I'm hooked and now waiting eagerly for the last 2 episodes it's fresh with a multi-layered story id advise people who gave up on it early to go with it well worth your time.

More eye-opening twists and jaw-dropping revelations.
  • Nov 28, 2019
Awesome season, it has a quicker pace then the first season.
  • Nov 25, 2019
    derivative story- one dimensional characters.
  • Nov 24, 2019
    Watchable but nothing groundbreaking.
  • Nov 23, 2019
I was so bored that I gave up after the third episode. The acting is over the top and ham-fisted - the cursing sounds forced, and what is with the race baiting? I wish these show runners would keep their lopsided, white-man-bad politics out of their shows, we get enough of that on the news. Hard pass, none of the atmosphere and charm of the first season, and certainly not the same caliber of acting!

Somehow better than Season 1 and I can't believe I'm writing that since Season 1 was FANTASTIC!
